Summer is arriving!

Strengthen our skin’s natural defenses against the sun’s rays.

We can feel the warmth from each ray of the sun…Summer is arriving!

We eagerly anticipate its life-giving rays. Look forward to days of frolicking in bodies of water, wherever they may be. Let’s not forget those exciting adventures and sports that can only occur in the arms of Mother Nature. However, we must also be aware of the other side of that coin… UV rays can damage our unprotected skin if we do not take precautions. There is that all-important sunscreen; however, are you aware that what we consume will also help protect us from harmful UV rays?

Nature offers us a bounty of delicious foods rich in vitamins and antioxidants. These can help strengthen our skin's natural defenses against the sun's rays. Let me offer a few that are right at our reach!

  1. Everyone hears about the importance of Vitamin C, we often think that it’s only found in our citrus fruit, but it’s also plentiful in other foodstuffs such as strawberries, kiwi, and even red peppers! Vitamin C helps repair cell damage, stimulate collagen production, and even improves skin texture. When you have strong skin, it is more resistant to the sun’s negative effects!

  2. The ever-powerful antioxidant that protects cells from free radicals generated by sun exposure is Vitamin E. Sure, you can always take a little pill, but it is a lot tastier, and healthier. if you grab a handful of almonds, sunflower seeds, or pick some tasty avocados right off the tree! After you enjoy them, sit back and let them do their work!

  3. Found in carrots, mangoes, sweet potatoes, and even in spinach is Beta-carotene. Your body will transform them into Vitamin A, which is essential for cell regeneration and natural skin pigmentation. Here’s also a beauty secret: they help maintain a longer-lasting tan... won’t that look great when you put on that fabulous summer outfit!

  4. Did you know that Omega 3 is found salmon, walnuts, and chia seeds? Yes indeed! All of these have anti-inflammatory properties and help keep the skin hydrated, making it more resistant to sun damage… also keeps it radiant.

  5. Last on our list is Lycopene, which is not mentioned as often, but is just as important. Studies suggest that it may act as an "internal sunscreen" by reducing skin redness after sun exposure. Lycopene is found in watermelon, papaya and tomatoes, go ahead, just pick them straight from the vine.

And for that added bonus… Always drink lots of water! Hydration is key to keeping your skin healthy during the summer heat, and all year-round
